Therapy Dog Training: Board & Train Owner Assisted Program

“Therapy Dog Training: Board & Train Owner Assisted Program”

MidproK9 is proud to offer our comprehensive Therapy Dog Training: Board & Train Owner Assisted Program. This unique program combines professional obedience training with hands-on owner involvement to ensure that both you and your dog are ready for the important role of therapy work.

Program Overview:

This program is designed for dog owners who aspire for their dogs to become certified therapy dogs. It begins with a focused Board & Train component, where one of our expert trainers will work with your dog to establish the essential obedience foundation required for therapy work. Following this phase, the owner will actively participate in further training, which includes therapy-specific exercises and field trips to prepare your dog for real-world scenarios.

Price:  $3995

Phase 1: Board & Train (Trainer-Led)

Duration: 2-4 weeks (depending on your dog’s progress)

  • Meet and Greet & Evaluation: Our trainer will conduct a thorough evaluation of your dog to determine suitability for therapy work and identify specific training needs.

  • Deluxe Boarding: Your dog will enjoy our Deluxe boarding suites, ensuring a comfortable and stress-free stay while they learn.

  • Daily Training Sessions: Our trainers will work on key obedience skills, focusing on commands like sit, stay, recall, heel, and others, tailored to therapy dog requirements.

  • Communication: You will receive regular email updates on your dog’s progress, including videos, training reports, and tips to help you prepare for your involvement in the next phase.

Phase 2: Owner Assisted Training

Duration: 4-6 weeks

  • Owner Participation: After the foundational training, you will join the sessions with your dog. Together, we’ll continue refining obedience while introducing the therapy dog skills crucial for certification.

  • Distraction Training: We will train your dog to remain calm and focused in various settings and around common distractions that therapy dogs typically encounter, such as wheelchairs, loud noises, and unfamiliar environments.

  • Environmental Situations & Socialization: Your dog will be exposed to different environments and social settings to ensure they can adapt comfortably to new places and people. We emphasize proper socialization and help your dog develop the confidence to navigate busy or unfamiliar environments.

  • Field Trips: You and your dog will participate in supervised field trips to public places like schools, hospitals, and community centers to practice these skills in real-world situations. This hands-on experience is vital in preparing your dog for their future role as a therapy animal.

Final Phase: Certification

Upon successful completion of the program, your dog will be certified through MidproK9 as a therapy dog. This certification will acknowledge that your dog has met the highest standards of training and is ready to provide comfort, companionship, and support in therapy settings.

This program is ideal for those who want to actively contribute to their dog’s development while also benefiting from a strong foundation of professional training. With a combination of structured obedience training and real-world experiences, your dog will be fully prepared to take on the responsibilities of a certified therapy dog.

What is a Therapy Dog?

A therapy dog is a dog that has been trained to provide comfort, affection, and support to people in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and disaster areas. Therapy dogs are different from service dogs, which are trained to perform tasks for people with disabilities.  Therapy dogs are trained to interact with all types of people, not just their handlers.
